Seagate Unveils Mozaic 4+ Platform: Pioneering HAMR-Based Storage for Hyperscale Data Centers
As the digital landscape evolves, the demand for scalable, efficient, and high-performance data storage solutions continues to surge. Seagate Technology has announced the qualification and production deployment of its next-generation Mozaic 4+ platform—the industry’s only heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) storage platform operating at scale. Now in use with two leading hyperscale cloud providers, Mozaic 4+ supports storage capacities up to 44 TB, marking a significant milestone in enterprise data infrastructure.
Advancing Storage Capacity and Reliability
Seagate’s Mozaic 4+ platform is engineered to meet the growing needs of hyperscale environments. With ongoing customer qualifications, Seagate is on track to scale from today’s 4+ TB per-disk to a future 10 TB per-disk, paving the way for hard drives with capacities reaching 100 TB. The platform features a next-generation suspension architecture and an enhanced system-on-a-chip, enabling precise data recording at higher densities while maintaining enterprise-grade reliability. Each new generation of the platform delivers increased capacity without requiring disruptive changes to existing infrastructure.
According to Seagate’s chair and CEO, Dave Mosley, “Data has become one of the most valuable assets for enterprises, fueling business insights, enhancing productivity, and enabling competitive advantage. As the foundation of modern data center infrastructure, data storage solutions are essential to manage ever-increasing data volumes and maximize returns on investments in today’s AI-driven world. Seagate’s HAMR-based Mozaic products deliver the scale, performance, and efficiency customers need to unlock the full potential of their data.”
With the majority of the world’s largest cloud storage providers already qualified on the Mozaic platform, this achievement highlights its critical role in supporting modern data center operations.
Innovative HAMR Technology with Integrated Photonics
At the core of the Mozaic 4+ platform is Seagate’s custom-designed laser technology, the result of years of investment in nanophotonic engineering. This vertically integrated approach allows Seagate to maintain control over design, yield, reliability, and supply chain resilience—key factors as global data creation accelerates. Vertical integration also streamlines qualification processes and supports predictable manufacturing economics, ensuring that the platform can meet the demands of hyperscale deployments.
Addressing Data Center Challenges in the AI Era
Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications rely on the ability to store and access vast volumes of data, including training datasets, historical archives, and AI-generated content. Hyperscale cloud providers depend on mass-capacity hard drives to efficiently manage and reactivate these expanding data pools, which are essential for trustworthy AI workloads.
The Mozaic 4+ platform delivers incremental increases in per-disk capacity, enabling high-capacity, cost-effective storage that scales without expanding the physical or energy footprint of data centers. This advancement improves capacity per rack and per watt, enhancing data center efficiency, reducing total cost of ownership, and supporting sustainable data preservation and reactivation.
For example, in a one-exabyte deployment, Mozaic technology improves infrastructure efficiency by approximately 47% compared to standard 30 TB deployments. This translates to a reduction of about 100 square feet in data center footprint and an annual energy savings of roughly 0.8 million kilowatt-hours. At the scale required for AI, these efficiencies provide significant economic and operational advantages.
Bob O’Donnell, President of TECHnalysis Research, notes, “As AI models have evolved and GenAI-powered applications have expanded, the need for massive amounts of data—both real and synthetically generated—has become essential to continued AI advancement. High-capacity hard drive innovations like HAMR are now critical to the quality and speed of AI outputs.”
Availability of Mozaic 4+ Hard Drives
Seagate’s Mozaic 4+ hard drives, supporting capacities up to 44 TB, are now shipping in volume to two leading hyperscale cloud providers. Broader availability is expected as production continues to scale, positioning the Mozaic platform as a cornerstone for the next generation of data center infrastructure.
