NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 "Blackwell" Workstation GPU Now Retails for $16,000

The graphics card market continues to see significant price increases, and workstation GPUs are no exception. NVIDIA’s latest update to its marketplace reveals that the flagship RTX PRO 6000 "Blackwell" workstation graphics card now carries a retail price of $16,000. This positions it as the most expensive GPU in NVIDIA’s lineup outside of its server-focused B200 and B300 models, which utilize the SXM form factor.

Unprecedented Pricing Driven by Memory Costs

The RTX PRO 6000 "Blackwell" is a powerhouse, featuring 24,064 CUDA cores and an impressive 96 GB of GDDR7 memory. Despite its high-end specifications, the current price tag is remarkable and highlights the ongoing impact of memory shortages on GPU pricing. The card is built with 32 GDDR7 memory modules, each offering 3 GB of capacity. Any increase in supply chain costs for these modules is magnified across all 32 units, significantly affecting the overall manufacturing cost.

Physically, the GPU’s design includes 16 GDDR7 modules on the front side of the PCB alongside the GPU die, and another 16 modules on the back, effectively sandwiching the PCB. This configuration results in a total of 32 memory modules per card. As of late July, each 3 GB GDDR7 module was priced between $60 and $70, bringing the total memory cost for a single card to between $1,920 and $2,240. These figures represent just the raw material costs for the memory, not accounting for other essential components.

Additional Component Shortages and Price Increases

Beyond memory, other components such as multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are also experiencing tight supply, further driving up production costs. These supply chain challenges have contributed to NVIDIA’s decision to set the RTX PRO 6000 "Blackwell" at a $16,000 retail price.

For context, the GPU originally launched with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $8,565. In June, the price increased to $13,250, and just two months later, it has climbed to $16,000. This represents an 87% increase over the original MSRP. If current trends continue and prices do not stabilize, the cost could potentially exceed $17,000 in the near future, marking a 100% increase from launch.

While these price hikes are significant, the impact is less pronounced for workstation clients compared to the consumer gaming market. Workstation users often prioritize performance and reliability for professional workloads, and are more likely to absorb higher hardware costs as part of their overall investment in productivity and capability.
