GeForce RTX 5090 GPUs Diverted to AI Server Farms, Impacting Gamers
Recent images published by HKEPC reveal pallets of unopened GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards being delivered and unpacked at AI server assembly facilities. These sites are opting for standard retail RTX 5090 GPUs, rather than NVIDIA’s specialized RTX PRO 6000 or dedicated data center accelerators designed for artificial intelligence workloads. The cards being installed are the same consumer models that have become increasingly scarce and expensive for gamers worldwide.
AI Demand Drives Up RTX 5090 Prices
This trend echoes the GPU shortages seen during the cryptocurrency mining boom, when miners purchased GeForce cards in bulk, leaving gamers facing inflated prices and limited availability. At that time, NVIDIA introduced Lite Hash Rate (LHR) models to restrict mining performance while preserving gaming capabilities. However, those restrictions were eventually circumvented.
Today, the surge in demand is driven by AI applications rather than crypto mining, but the effect on the gaming community is strikingly similar. Retail prices for the RTX 5090 have soared, with some listings exceeding $5,000—more than double the card’s original $1,999 MSRP. Industry analysts had previously cautioned that such a scenario was likely, and the latest developments provide clear evidence of the factors driving these price hikes.
Standard RTX 5090s Used Despite AI-Limited Variants
Interestingly, the GPUs seen in these photos are not the RTX 5090D or v2 models—variants specifically produced for the Chinese market with restricted AI capabilities to comply with export regulations. NVIDIA has already demonstrated its ability to limit AI performance on GeForce cards while maintaining gaming performance. However, these restrictions have not been applied to the standard RTX 5090 models available globally.
With artificial intelligence now a core focus for NVIDIA, it appears unlikely that the company will intervene to limit the use of retail RTX 5090 cards in AI server environments. As a result, gamers continue to face high prices and limited access to the latest high-end GPUs, as demand from AI server farms shows no sign of slowing down.
