Micron Unveils 245TB 6600 ION SSD: Redefining Data Center Storage Density
Micron Technology has begun shipping the Micron 6600 ION SSD, now recognized as the world’s highest-capacity commercially available solid-state drive at 245 terabytes (TB). This breakthrough in storage technology marks a significant leap forward for data center infrastructure, offering unprecedented rack-scale storage density tailored for AI, cloud, enterprise, and hyperscale workloads. The 6600 ION SSD is engineered to meet the demands of next-generation AI data lakes and large-scale file and object storage environments.
Transforming Data Center Economics and Efficiency
The 245TB Micron 6600 ION E3.L SSD dramatically reduces the physical footprint required for high-capacity storage. Compared to traditional HDD-based deployments, it requires 82% fewer racks to achieve the same raw storage capacity. This efficiency is made possible by Micron’s advanced G9 QLC NAND technology, which is at least one generation ahead of competing QLC NAND used in other data center SSDs. As a result, organizations can store and process significantly more data in less space, while also lowering power and cooling requirements—without compromising on the performance needed for data-intensive workloads.
Industry experts highlight the shift in storage economics driven by AI and cloud workloads. As AI datasets grow rapidly, the need for higher rack-level efficiency becomes critical. The Micron 6600 ION SSD delivers the density and predictable performance required to scale AI data pipelines, all while supporting strict power and cooling constraints. This enables data center operators to optimize total cost of ownership and address the growing challenges of power availability and sustainability.
Quarter-Petabyte Scale Storage in Compact Form Factors
The Micron 6600 ION SSD is available in both U.2 and E3.L form factors, providing flexibility for diverse data center architectures. Its compact design and increased capacity per drive simplify operations, reduce potential failure points, and minimize maintenance needs. At maximum power, the 245TB SSD consumes up to 30 watts—half the power required by comparable-capacity HDD deployments. These energy efficiency gains support sustainability initiatives by reducing overall energy usage, cooling demands, and carbon emissions, which are increasingly important for global data center operators.
With the ability to fit significantly more storage into each rack, organizations benefit from reduced power consumption, less floor space usage, and lower operational overhead. This translates into meaningful reductions in total cost of ownership, especially for enterprises building out AI and large-scale data center environments.
Performance and Sustainability Benchmarks
The Micron 6600 ION SSD sets new standards for performance and energy efficiency in extreme-capacity deployments. Lab testing demonstrates substantial improvements over HDD-based systems, particularly for AI and object storage workloads:
- For AI workloads: Up to 84 times better energy efficiency, 8.6 times faster AI preprocessing, and 3.4 times higher ingest throughput, with up to 29 times lower latency.
- For object storage: Up to 435 times better throughput per watt, 96 times faster time to first byte, and 58 times higher aggregate throughput.
At scale, deploying 245TB Micron 6600 ION SSDs requires 1.9 times less energy than equivalent HDD deployments in a 1 exabyte (EB) environment. These efficiency gains can lead to significant sustainability impacts, including:
- CO2 savings equivalent to the annual absorption of over 9,000 mature trees
- 438 metric tons of CO2 reduction per year
- 921 megawatt-hours of energy saved annually
- HVAC cooling savings exceeding 3.14 billion British thermal units per year
The Micron 6600 ION 245TB SSD represents a new era in data center storage, combining extreme capacity, high performance, and energy efficiency to meet the evolving needs of AI-driven and cloud-scale infrastructures.
