Seagate Unveils Roadmap for 50TB and Beyond: The Future of HAMR Hard Drives
Seagate has revealed its latest storage technology roadmap during its Q4 fiscal 2026 earnings presentation, highlighting significant advancements in hard drive capacity powered by Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology. The company announced plans to introduce 50TB HAMR hard drives for customer validation in 2027, marking a major milestone in data storage innovation.
Mozaic 4+ Platform: Paving the Way to Higher Capacities
Currently, Seagate’s Mozaic 4+ platform supports hard drives with capacities up to 44TB. This platform leverages HAMR technology to achieve higher data densities, meeting the growing demands of enterprise and data center customers. By the end of 2026, Seagate expects Mozaic 4+ models to represent half of all HAMR exabytes shipped, underscoring the rapid adoption of this advanced storage solution.
Seagate CEO Dave Mosley stated, “We expect to achieve our next ramp milestone by exiting calendar 2026 with 50% of our HAMR exabytes on our Mozaic 4 platform.” CFO Gianluca Romano further confirmed that the company is on track to exceed 5TB per platter, enabling 50TB capacities in flagship hard drives that utilize ten platters per unit.
Introducing Mozaic 5+: The Next Generation of HAMR Drives
The next evolution in Seagate’s roadmap is the Mozaic 5+ platform, representing the third generation of its HAMR technology. Mozaic 5+ will enable densities greater than 5TB per platter, with initial drives expected to ship for customer qualification in late 2027. These drives will undergo rigorous validation by OEMs and data centers before broader deployment.
Looking Ahead: Toward 100TB Hard Drives
Seagate’s innovation pipeline extends well beyond 50TB. The company has set a laboratory demonstration target of 10TB per platter by around 2028, which could eventually lead to hard drives approaching the 100TB mark. Last year, Seagate successfully produced a prototype platter with a capacity of approximately 6.9TB and is actively working toward achieving 8TB per platter.
The company’s long-term capacity roadmap outlines a progression from 40–44TB drives in the 2027–2028 timeframe, scaling to 50–60TB around 2030, and surpassing 80TB by 2031–2032. These advancements are primarily aimed at large-scale customers such as cloud providers, enterprises, and AI companies. Consumer availability of these high-capacity drives typically follows several years later, if at all.
Seagate’s ongoing commitment to HAMR technology and its ambitious roadmap signal a new era for data storage, addressing the exponential growth in data generated by modern applications and services.
