The upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards are expected to launch with a notable price increase, potentially ranging from 20% to 30% depending on the specific model. This anticipated rise in cost is primarily attributed to the escalating prices of GDDR7 memory, a critical component supplied by NVIDIA’s VRAM partners.

According to reports from ZDNet Korea, South Korean importers and distributors have already notified the supply chain about the impending price adjustments. The increase could reach as high as 30%, impacting both manufacturers and end consumers. NVIDIA supplies its add-in board (AIB) partners with GDDR7 memory as part of a kit that includes both the GPU die and the memory modules. As a result, any surge in memory prices directly affects the overall cost structure for AIBs and, ultimately, the retail price for consumers.

Breakdown of GDDR7 Memory Costs

Currently, each 2 GB GDDR7 memory module is priced in the low $20 range. For NVIDIA’s flagship GeForce RTX 5090 GPU, a total of 16 modules are required, resulting in a minimum memory cost of approximately $320 per unit. This figure does not account for the additional expenses associated with the GPU die itself, research and development, or the profit margins for AIB partners.

The situation is particularly notable in South Korea, a global leader in DRAM production and home to major manufacturers such as SK hynix and Samsung. Despite the country’s dominant position in the memory market, local companies are not immune to these rising costs. Industry experts anticipate that the upward trend in GDDR7 pricing will persist, further influencing the final retail prices of next-generation graphics cards.
