Intel Xeon 7 "Diamond Rapids" Flagship to Feature Up to 256 P-Cores
Recent leaks from trusted Intel source Jaykihn have revealed that Intel’s upcoming Xeon 7 "Diamond Rapids" processors will include a flagship SKU boasting up to 256 performance cores (P-Cores). This new information challenges earlier reports, which suggested the flagship would be limited to 192 P-Cores and 192 threads, as the current generation does not support Hyper-Threading.
Architecture and Core Configuration
Insights from Intel’s VLSI Symposium 2026 presentation shed light on the architecture of "Diamond Rapids." The processor is designed with four Compute tiles, also referred to as core building blocks (CBBs), each manufactured using the advanced Intel 18A-P foundry node. Each Compute tile integrates a CPU complex featuring 48 "Panther Cove" P-Cores and a dedicated L3 cache. However, the possibility of a 256-core flagship suggests that each CBB could be scaled up to 64 cores, potentially accompanied by a larger L3 cache to support the increased core count.
Performance and Efficiency Enhancements
The adoption of the Intel 18A-P node brings notable improvements in both performance and power efficiency. According to Intel, the new CBBs are expected to deliver a 9% performance boost at the same power level compared to the standard 18A node, or achieve an 18% reduction in power consumption at equivalent performance. With Intel’s focus on maximizing performance, these advancements are likely to translate into higher computational throughput or improved energy efficiency, especially with the expanded core count.
Platform, Power, and Memory Considerations
Earlier reports indicated that the 192 P-Core version of "Diamond Rapids" would feature a 500 W TDP, support 16 DDR5 memory channels, and utilize the new LGA-9324 socket on the "Oak Stream" platform. However, the move to a 256-core design could push power requirements even higher. Industry sources, including cooling solution manufacturers, have suggested that TDPs could exceed 800 W for these high-end SKUs, necessitating advanced thermal management solutions.
Competitive Landscape: Intel vs. AMD
Intel’s 256-core Xeon 7 "Diamond Rapids" is positioned to compete directly with AMD’s Zen 6 "Venice" platform, which already offers up to 256 Zen 6c dense cores and 512 threads. While AMD’s platform is currently available, Intel’s Xeon 7 series is scheduled for release next year. This head-to-head competition is expected to drive significant advancements in server and data center performance.
Looking Ahead: Hyper-Threading and Future Xeon Families
While "Diamond Rapids" does not include Hyper-Threading, Intel has announced plans to reintroduce this feature with the Xeon 8 "Coral Rapids" family, expected in 2028. This roadmap highlights Intel’s ongoing commitment to innovation and performance leadership in the data center processor market.
