Noctua’s Case Compatibility Testing Reveals Surprising Variations in CPU Cooler Clearance
Noctua, renowned for its high-performance cooling solutions—including low-profile air coolers, large dual-tower air coolers, and AIO liquid coolers—has recently conducted extensive testing on PC case compatibility. The company’s findings highlight a significant discrepancy between the CPU cooler height specifications provided by case manufacturers and the actual measurements observed in real-world scenarios.
Discrepancies in Manufacturer Specifications
When building a custom PC, ensuring that a large tower air cooler fits inside the chosen case is crucial. Manufacturers typically list the maximum CPU cooler height their chassis can support. However, Noctua’s recent tests, which covered over 100 different PC cases, revealed that more than half of these cases do not match their advertised specifications. The margin of error ranged from cases offering 3.5 mm less clearance than stated, to others providing up to 10 mm more space than specified.
Out of the cases tested, approximately 56 deviated from the manufacturer’s listed CPU cooler height. Interestingly, most of these cases offered more headroom than advertised, which is generally beneficial for users seeking to install larger or more advanced cooling solutions.
Real-World Examples: When Less Space Matters
While extra space is a welcome surprise, some cases fall short of their claimed specifications. For instance, the ASUS Prime AP201 is marketed with 170 mm of CPU cooler clearance, but Noctua’s measurements found only 168.3 mm of usable space. This seemingly minor difference can impact compatibility with large coolers like the Noctua NH-D15 G2. In this scenario, users cannot adjust the front fan to increase RAM clearance, limiting them to RAM modules no taller than 32 mm. Taller RAM kits will interfere with the cooler, restricting upgrade options.
Another example is the Lian Li B4-mATX, which measured at 164.5 mm instead of the advertised 168 mm. This shortfall makes it incompatible with the NH-D15 G2, highlighting the importance of accurate case specifications for enthusiasts and builders.

Noctua maintains a comprehensive case compatibility database on its website, which includes a field indicating whether a case has been physically tested by the company. As Noctua continues to expand its testing program, more cases will be added to this resource, providing valuable, real-world data for PC builders.
Positive Trends in Cooler Headroom
Despite some cases falling short, the trend of cases offering more CPU cooler headroom than advertised is a positive development. Models such as the Corsair 5000D, 4000D, and Frame 4000D have been found to provide up to 10 mm more clearance than specified, while the Thermaltake TR100 offers an additional 2.7 mm. This extra space can make a significant difference when selecting high-performance air coolers, ensuring better compatibility and flexibility for custom PC builds.
