The latest kernel introduces a series of scheduler enhancements designed to optimize efficiency, reduce latency, and provide better support for asymmetric CPU architectures, such as Intel’s hybrid designs featuring both Performance (P) Cores and Efficiency (E) Cores.

Key Scheduler Improvements for Gaming

The updated scheduler in Linux Kernel 7.3 is engineered to deliver smoother and more consistent gaming experiences, particularly on low-power and older PC hardware. Gamers can expect improvements in average frames per second (FPS), as well as in 1% and 0.1% low FPS metrics, which are critical for minimizing stutter and ensuring stable frame times. In benchmark testing with Shadows Awakening—run via GOG and GE-Proton 10-34 on an Intel Core i7-2600K paired with an AMD Radeon RX 580—the impact of the new scheduler is clear. Average frame rates increased by 25%, while average frame times improved by 50%. Notably, minimum FPS jumped from 4.0 to 29.0, representing a remarkable 7.25× improvement. The CachyOS development team has announced that these scheduler improvements will be included in the upcoming CachyOS 7.2 Kernel release.
