NVIDIA DLSS 5: Early Neural Rendering Mod Transforms Skyrim’s Visuals
NVIDIA’s announcement of DLSS 5 in March sparked considerable debate within the gaming community, particularly regarding its impact on character faces. While the technology has yet to see an official release, an early-access build of NBA 2K27 recently surfaced with a DLSS Neural Rendering (DLSS-NR) DLL, believed to be an early version of DLSS 5. This discovery quickly caught the attention of modders eager to experiment with the new neural rendering technique in other games.
One of the most notable implementations comes from YouTuber PureDark, who integrated the DLSS-NR mod into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Despite Skyrim’s age—now 15 years old—the mod delivers a remarkable visual upgrade, especially to character models. Side-by-side comparisons reveal significant improvements in facial detail, lighting, shadows, and even the underlying facial structure. The overall lighting in the game also benefits, with some scenes approaching the quality of path-traced rendering.
It’s important to note that this mod uses a pre-release version of DLSS-NR, extracted from NBA 2K27, and is not an official NVIDIA release. As such, the final version of DLSS 5 may differ substantially from what is currently seen in these mods. There are also ongoing discussions about the artistic implications of applying DLSS 5’s post-processing filters to games, and how much creative control developers will retain over its use.
Nevertheless, the early results in Skyrim suggest that DLSS 5’s neural rendering could represent a significant leap forward in game graphics, breathing new life into classic titles and setting the stage for future visual enhancements across the industry.
