AMD RDNA 4m GPU Architecture Nears Launch with Linux Firmware Support
AMD’s highly anticipated RDNA 4m GPU architecture is moving closer to its official release, as the company has begun uploading firmware binaries to the Linux Firmware repository. This development, first reported by Phoronix, signals that AMD is actively preparing for the debut of its RDNA 4m GPU IP, also known as GFX 1170. The addition of these binaries to the Linux Firmware repository is a strong indicator that the launch is imminent, as AMD typically releases such firmware at or just after product launch. In recent cycles, the company has even started pushing firmware updates slightly ahead of schedule, further suggesting that the first wave of RDNA 4m-powered products is on the horizon.
Positioning RDNA 4m Between RDNA 3.5 and RDNA 4
The RDNA 4m GPU IP occupies a unique position in AMD’s graphics lineup, bridging the gap between RDNA 3.5 (GFX1150) and the forthcoming RDNA 4 (GFX1200). While RDNA 4m incorporates some advancements over RDNA 3.5, it does not fully embody the next-generation features of RDNA 4. This hybrid approach means RDNA 4m is not a direct successor to either architecture, but rather a transitional step that brings select improvements to integrated graphics solutions.
Among the anticipated features of RDNA 4m are support for INT8 data types and native integration of FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4) technology. However, with AMD’s recent announcement that FSR 4 upscaling will also be available on older RDNA generations, the specific advantages and intended role of RDNA 4m remain somewhat ambiguous. Despite this, the architecture is expected to enhance integrated graphics performance, especially as AMD continues to utilize RDNA 3.5 iGPUs in its processors through at least 2029. This long-term support means that most upcoming laptops will offer integrated graphics capabilities similar to those found in current Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series chips.
