NVIDIA DLSS 5 Leaked Tool Now Running on RTX 4000 Series Thanks to Modding Community
The modding community has once again demonstrated its technical prowess by enabling NVIDIA’s leaked DLSS 5 tool to run on RTX 4000 series graphics cards. Originally designed exclusively for the upcoming RTX 5000 Blackwell GPUs, this advanced AI-powered upscaling technology is now accessible to a broader range of hardware, thanks to dedicated enthusiasts.
How the DLSS 5 Leak Happened
The DLSS 5 DLL surfaced earlier this week through an early-access build of NBA 2K27. Members of the RenoDX Discord community quickly took notice and began experimenting with the leaked files. By leveraging tools like ReShade and RenoDX, modders managed to integrate the new DLSS technology into other games, bypassing its original hardware restrictions.
Technical Challenges and Solutions
DLSS 5’s AI model operates using FP8 precision, a feature natively supported by NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace GPUs (RTX 4000 series). However, the leaked binaries were compiled specifically for Blackwell’s sm_120 architecture, leaving out support for both Ampere and Ada architectures. This presented a significant compatibility hurdle.
A modder known as "Uncle Burrito" addressed this issue by identifying the incompatible binaries within the DLL and replacing them with versions built for Ada Lovelace GPUs. This modification allowed the DLSS 5 tool to function on RTX 4000 series cards. Tom’s Hardware has independently verified that the patch works on an RTX 4080, and other developers within the RenoDX Discord are reportedly working on alternative solutions.
Current Limitations and Future Prospects
While the modded DLSS 5 implementation is still in its early stages and may not be fully stable, its rapid adaptation highlights the resourcefulness of the PC gaming community. There is currently no official word from NVIDIA regarding support for older GPUs at launch. However, the swift progress made by modders could influence NVIDIA’s future plans for broader compatibility.
It’s important to note that while Ada Lovelace GPUs can handle FP8 operations required by DLSS 5, older Ampere cards lack native FP8 support. This hardware limitation may make it significantly more challenging to bring DLSS 5 to those previous-generation GPUs, even with community-driven efforts.
