CXMT Begins High-Volume Production of Next-Generation LPDDR6 Memory

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has officially commenced high-volume manufacturing of LPDDR6 memory, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of mobile memory technology. This achievement positions CXMT among the first companies worldwide to bring LPDDR6 memory modules to mass production, closely aligning with the timelines of leading South Korean memory manufacturers.

Xiaomi 18 Fold to Feature CXMT’s LPDDR6 Memory

According to industry sources, Xiaomi is set to become the first customer to integrate CXMT’s domestically produced LPDDR6 memory into its upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold smartphone. With the device scheduled for a September launch, CXMT is already shipping LPDDR6 modules to meet production deadlines. This rapid transition from risk production to volume shipments highlights the high yield and maturity of CXMT’s manufacturing process.

LPDDR6: Advancing Mobile Memory Performance

LPDDR6 memory represents a substantial leap forward in mobile DRAM technology. CXMT’s LPDDR6 modules are designed to operate at speeds up to 12.8 Gbps, surpassing the base LPDDR6 speed of 10.7 Gbps. For comparison, the previous generation LPDDR5X could reach up to 10.7 Gbps only when heavily overclocked. The new LPDDR6 standard not only delivers higher data rates but also sets the stage for future advancements in mobile device performance and efficiency.

Each CXMT LPDDR6 chip features a 16 Gb (2 GB) capacity and is packaged using a package-on-package (POP) design with approximately 1,295 pins in a ball grid array. This advanced packaging supports the high-speed operation and integration required by modern smartphones and other mobile devices.

Industry-Wide Progress in LPDDR6 Development

SK hynix, a major South Korean memory manufacturer, is also nearing mass production of LPDDR6 modules. The company has announced that its LPDDR6 memory will offer a 16 Gb capacity, manufactured on its sixth-generation 10 nm process node (1c), and will operate at speeds up to 14.4 Gbps. While SK hynix’s modules may achieve even higher data rates, all current offerings remain within JEDEC’s official LPDDR6 specification.

The introduction of LPDDR6 memory by CXMT and other industry leaders signals a new era for mobile devices, promising faster data transfer rates, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced user experiences. As manufacturing technologies continue to evolve, even greater performance gains are expected in future generations of mobile memory.
