Community-Driven DLSS 5 Builds for Legacy Hardware
Developer ShortFuse has released new DLSS-NR builds specifically targeting older RTX hardware. Among these is a "speed boost" build designed for the RTX 20-series, aiming to improve performance on these aging GPUs. However, results remain inconsistent. While some games, such as the original Red Dead Redemption, reportedly run with DLSS 5 enabled, others like Red Dead Redemption 2 fail to initialize. Hogwarts Legacy becomes stuck in a standby state, and GTA 5 only manages to run for a brief period before the display signal drops.
FP16 Implementation Improves Performance on Turing and Ampere
The community has also made strides in optimizing DLSS 5 for older architectures. According to X user @DystopianSuns, DLSS 5 is now running on both RTX 20 and RTX 30 GPUs using an FP16 (16-bit floating point) implementation. This marks a shift from the earlier FP8 approach, which significantly hindered performance on Ampere-based cards. Since neither Turing nor Ampere architectures accelerate FP8 as efficiently as Blackwell, the move to FP16 has resulted in more stable and respectable performance across a range of titles.
Reports from the RenoDX Discord indicate that RTX 30-series users are experiencing solid results in various games. Notably, DLSS 5 has even been enabled in Manhunt running through the PS2 emulator PCSX2, and testers have confirmed functionality in older DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 titles—well beyond the APIs officially supported by NVIDIA for DLSS 5.
