Motherboard Prices Set to Rise Amid Soaring Component Costs
The PC hardware market is bracing for another round of motherboard price increases, according to recent insights from the Chinese industry forum Board Channels. Industry sources indicate that the cost of producing motherboards has surged by at least 10%, yet manufacturers only implemented an average price hike of about 3% in August. This discrepancy suggests that further price adjustments are likely on the horizon.
Key Drivers Behind the Cost Surge
The primary factor fueling these increases is the rising price of printed circuit boards (PCBs), which have reportedly jumped by 15% to 50% depending on the specific board type. Capacitors, another essential component, have seen prices climb by approximately 50%. Additionally, Wi-Fi modules are estimated to have increased by 10% to 20%. These figures reflect the bill-of-materials costs and do not yet account for manufacturing and logistics expenses, which could further impact final pricing.
How Manufacturers Are Responding
The August price adjustments varied across major motherboard brands. MSI is said to have raised prices across its entire product range, while ASUS and Gigabyte focused their increases on select high-volume models. Despite these changes, the average 3% price hike falls short of offsetting the reported rise in production costs. This suggests that manufacturers have been absorbing a portion of the increased expenses, at least temporarily.
While these reports have not been officially confirmed by the manufacturers, similar figures have been independently corroborated by multiple industry sources. Previous reports also indicated that ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI were preparing for further pricing changes in the third quarter.
