GeForce RTX 3060 Modified to Run Solely on PCIe Power

In a remarkable display of hardware ingenuity, a creator in China has re-engineered the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card to operate entirely from the PCIe slot, eliminating the need for traditional 6-pin or 8-pin power connectors. This unique modification, showcased by Bilibili user WestmereX and first reported by UNIKO's Hardware, transforms the RTX 3060 into a single-slot, low-profile GPU roughly the size of a modern smartphone.

The custom card features a minimalist design, offering just one HDMI and one DisplayPort output. Cooling is managed by a blower-style fan that exhausts hot air through the rear, while the shroud is a thin metal sheet responsible for heat dissipation. Notably, the card lacks a fin stack, backplate, and relies on a basic heatsink positioned centrally.

Power Limitations and Performance Impact

Standard PCIe slots deliver a maximum of 75 watts, significantly less than the RTX 3060’s typical 170-watt TDP. To overcome this limitation, the modder implemented a shunt modification, tricking the card’s power-sensing circuitry into accepting the reduced power input. However, this drastic reduction in available power comes at a steep cost to performance.

The modified RTX 3060 struggles to maintain clock speeds above 900 MHz, far below its rated 1,777 MHz boost frequency. In 3DMark Time Spy benchmarks, the card achieved a score of just 4,821—less than half the performance of a standard RTX 3060, which typically scores around 9,000. This places the modified card behind older GPUs such as the GTX 1060 and RX 580.

Thermal Challenges and Practicality

Thermal performance is another significant concern. During testing, the GPU hotspot temperature exceeded 90 degrees Celsius, a result of the minimal cooling solution. The thin metal shroud and absence of a proper fin stack limit the card’s ability to dissipate heat effectively.

While the concept of a cable-free, PCIe-powered graphics card is intriguing—especially for ultra-compact PC builds where space is at a premium—the current execution serves more as a proof of concept than a practical solution. At this performance level, integrated graphics found in modern mini PCs may offer a better balance of efficiency and usability without the need for such extensive modifications.
