PC GPU Shipments Rise Despite High Prices: A Closer Look at the Market

Recent data from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) reveals that PC GPU shipments are on the rise, even as prices reach record highs. The latest figures show a complex landscape shaped by the diversity of PC form factors and the evolving roles of major GPU vendors.

Significant Growth Driven by Notebook GPUs

In the second quarter of this year, total PC GPU shipments reached 75.5 million units, marking a substantial 10.4% increase compared to the previous quarter and a 1.1% rise year-over-year. This growth is largely attributed to the notebook graphics card segment, which experienced an impressive 16.8% surge in shipments. In contrast, dedicated desktop GPUs saw a 4% decline on a quarterly basis, highlighting a shift in demand toward portable computing solutions.

Market Share Dynamics Among Leading GPU Vendors

The competitive landscape among the top GPU designers—AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA—continues to evolve. Intel remains the dominant force, accounting for 56% of all PC GPU shipments. This leadership is primarily due to Intel’s strong presence in integrated graphics, which are included in most modern Intel CPUs and widely used in laptops and other compact devices.

However, Intel’s market share has seen a slight decrease, dropping by 1% quarter-over-quarter and about 5% compared to the same period last year. NVIDIA recorded a modest 0.46% increase in market share, while AMD’s share grew by 0.6% over the quarter. These incremental changes reflect ongoing competition and shifting consumer preferences within the GPU market.

CPU Shipments: Notebooks Lead the Way

JPR’s analysis also covers CPU shipments, revealing notable growth for both AMD and Intel in the client sector. AMD’s CPU shipments increased by 12.74%, while Intel’s rose by 8.99%. The data underscores a continuing trend: notebook CPUs now account for the majority of shipments, with desktops representing just 22% and notebooks reaching a record 78% of client CPU shipments. This shift further emphasizes the growing importance of mobile computing in the PC industry.
