The gaming community has made a significant breakthrough in optimizing NVIDIA's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology. Real-World Performance Gains
The performance improvements are substantial. According to a Reddit user’s test on an RTX 4080 running Assassin's Creed Shadows at 4K with DLSS Performance mode, switching from NVIDIA’s default pipeline to Neural Upstream boosted frame rates from 31 FPS to approximately 50 FPS. For comparison, disabling the effect entirely resulted in 63 FPS. This demonstrates that the new rendering order can deliver a much smoother gaming experience without completely sacrificing the benefits of Neural Rendering.
Trade-Offs and Visual Quality
The original DLSS 5 pipeline places Neural Rendering at the end, after upscaling, to maximize image fidelity. However, this design choice leads to a significant performance hit at higher resolutions, as the neural network processes the full-size frame. By moving Neural Rendering earlier in the pipeline, Neural Upstream reduces the computational load but introduces a slight decrease in visual quality. This trade-off is similar to what users already experience when choosing between DLSS Performance and Quality modes, and it may exacerbate some of the "uncanny valley" effects already noted with DLSS 5.
Future Prospects for DLSS 5 Optimization
NVIDIA has stated that DLSS 5 is still being refined for the upcoming RTX 50-series GPUs, with plans to expand support to older graphics cards in the future.
