DLSS Multi Frame Generation Now Available on RTX 30-Series Thanks to New Mod
The modding community continues to push the boundaries of NVIDIA’s graphics technology, this time bringing advanced DLSS Multi Frame Generation features to GeForce RTX 30-series GPUs. A new mod, known as DLSSG SM86, enables RTX 30-series owners to access 2X and 4X Frame Generation modes—capabilities that NVIDIA officially reserves for its latest RTX 50-series "Blackwell" graphics cards.
How DLSSG SM86 Works
Unlike previous solutions that relied on AMD’s FSR Frame Generation as a substitute, DLSSG SM86 preserves NVIDIA’s proprietary DLSS models. The mod operates by creating a proxy backend tailored for the SM86 architecture found in RTX 30-series GPUs. This backend runs alongside the game, intercepting frame generation calls and redirecting them to a bundled DLSSG 310.1 runtime. Importantly, this process does not modify any of the game’s original files, ensuring a cleaner and more reversible installation.
Performance Gains and Testing
According to the developer’s documentation, the mod has been tested on an RTX 3080 Ti using driver version 591.86 under Windows with DirectX 12. Reported performance improvements are significant: in Black Myth: Wukong, frame rates increased from 50 FPS to 150 FPS using 4X Frame Generation. In Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing enabled, performance jumped from 35 FPS to 100 FPS. A YouTube demonstration by fogoticus further showcases the mod in action on an RTX 3080, with Cyberpunk 2077 running at 42 FPS in native mode, 74 FPS with 2X Frame Generation, and up to 120 FPS in 4X mode.
However, it’s important to note that comprehensive testing for frametime consistency, latency, and long-term stability has not yet been completed. As a result, while the raw FPS numbers are impressive, real-world smoothness and responsiveness may not fully align with these figures.
Why Was Multi Frame Generation Previously Unavailable?
NVIDIA has cited the Blackwell architecture’s Flip Metering technology as the reason for restricting Multi Frame Generation to RTX 50-series GPUs. Flip Metering is designed to maintain consistent frame pacing, which is crucial for smooth gameplay. Despite this, modders have already managed to run leaked DLSS 5 builds on older Ampere hardware, though with varying degrees of success.
