d-Matrix Secures $110 Million in Series-B Funding Round
d-Matrix, a leader in high-efficiency generative AI compute for data centers, has successfully closed a Series-B funding round, raising $110 million. The funding round was led by Temasek, a Singapore-based global investment firm. The primary objective of this funding is to support the commercialization of Corsair, the world's first Digital-In Memory Compute (DIMC) chiplet-based inference compute platform. This comes after the successful launches of d-Matrix's previous chiplets, Nighthawk, Jayhawk-I, and Jayhawk II.
d-Matrix's recent silicon announcement, Jayhawk II, demonstrates the company's commitment to revolutionizing memory-bound compute workloads commonly found in generative AI and large language model (LLM) applications. With the rapid growth of this groundbreaking technology in the past nine months, there is an urgent need to overcome the memory bottleneck and current technology limitations that hinder performance and increase AI compute costs. d-Matrix has developed an elegant DIMC engine and chiplet-based solution that enables inference at a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to GPU-based alternatives. The upcoming chiplet-based DIMC platform, set to launch in 2024, will redefine the category and solidify d-Matrix's position as a leader in efficient AI inference.
"The current trajectory of AI compute is unsustainable as the TCO to run AI inference is escalating rapidly," said Sid Sheth, co-founder and CEO at d-Matrix. "The team at d-Matrix is changing the cost economics of deploying AI inference with a compute solution purpose-built for LLMs, and this round of funding validates our position in the industry."
Sasha Ostojic, Partner at Playground Global, expressed confidence in d-Matrix's ability to make generative AI commercially viable, stating, "To achieve this ambitious goal, d-Matrix produced an innovative dataflow architecture, assembled into chiplets, connected with a high-speed interface, and driven by an enterprise-class scalable software stack. Playground couldn't be more excited and proud to back Sid and the d-Matrix team as it fulfills the demand from eager customers in desperate need of improved economics."
Michael Stewart from M12, Microsoft's Venture Fund, emphasized the importance of d-Matrix's plan in addressing the critical factor of LLM inference TCO in enterprise AI usage. Stewart stated, "d-Matrix has been following a plan that will enable industry-leading TCO for a variety of potential model service scenarios using a flexible, resilient chiplet architecture based on a memory-centric approach."
d-Matrix was founded in 2019 with the mission to solve the memory-compute integration problem, which is the final frontier in AI compute efficiency. The company has made significant investments in chiplet and digital in-memory compute technologies to bring a high-performance, cost-effective inference solution to the market by 2024. Since its inception, d-Matrix has experienced substantial growth in terms of team size and office space. The company is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, with additional offices in Bengaluru, India, and Sydney, Australia. With the Series-B funding, d-Matrix plans to focus on recruitment and the commercialization of its product to meet the immediate customer demand for lower-cost and more efficient compute infrastructure for generative AI inference.
